North Shore Kauai

- Saturday, August 02, 2008

If you're ever in Kauai, get as far away from paved roads as you can. It seems like every dirt road makes its way to an amazing beach. My desire for hiking has been betrayed by my desire to lounge in the water.

Nearly everywhere you go is the perfect hideaway to just relax and get away. Not a worry in the world; just soft sand, cool air, and a warm sun that makes you want to melt away.

And yet there is a bizarre sensation that it is unreal. The confines of a beautiful oasis constantly distracting. An amazing facade drawing you into a quasi-fulfilled state of happiness. The human spirit, I suspect, needs a little chaos to truly flourish. I wonder if that volcano will ever be active again?

  • You bet that volcano will erupt again! Kilauea starting erupting when my parents got married (coincidence?) and stopped when they divorced. Hmmm. Maybe all it will take is for two polar opposites to get married against all odds!

Did you eat any Kalua Pig and Laulau for me?? I'm gonna be mad if you say no!! :)

  • Yes and Yes! :)

And it turns out the roosters are everywhere because of a hurricane in 1992? I'll suspend judgment about animal control...

And while I was gone.. you're a Mom now! Congrats! That thing in your belly finally escaped!

Kuaui. Roosters.

Everywhere. The clucking makes for an interesting contrast while at
the beach.

The Living Room

Lounging at the Living Room, a local coffee shop / cafe near my place. I'm admiring the decor.

Juxtapose

- Tuesday, July 15, 2008

As I was wandering (as I often wander), my attention was caught by this kitschy corner store. From the outside it appeared as an overflow of strange glowing baubles.

They were simple ceramics, compartmentalized in a series of shelves. Organized not by size, function or material, but only by color.

Strip the filters of our perceptions and these objects sing and radiate the very essence of Platonic Being. They are as equally organized as they are in chaos.

The unknowing artist of this display evokes meaning in his or her creation, and reminds me that by our every action we are all unknowing artists -- shaping the perceived order and chaos of our existence.

I forgot my camera

- Wednesday, July 09, 2008

I left my camera at home while in Portland, hence the iPhone shots.

Fortunately, Tommy (pictured) is a better photographer and came prepared. Behold!

Space Dog

- Wednesday, July 02, 2008

Hanging out with Daniel the other night, their dog Chauncey had a skin allergy and now has a couple weeks with an e-collar. Aptly named "Elizabethan" collar... While sad, it's also adorable, poor Chauncey!

  • Did you get to witness Chauncey trying to climb stairs or walk through doorways? Now THAT'S a sight to behold :) My dog had to wear one for a bit, I got quite a few good laughs out of it, and she hated me for it!

  • He's a trooper, but I hope he doesn't hold a grudge against us for this. I don't quite understand the poor design...there is some sort of rope holding it on his neck because the plastic tabs are not sufficient. Thanks for keeping him company while I was away!!!

What's left after you're gone?

- Monday, June 02, 2008

**
All that scurrying about with various bouts of drama -- all very exciting -- and long after you're gone the tide continues. Our impact seems simultaneously important and meaningless.

The concept of "importance", seems relative to our own perceptions of reality; a circular train of reason that if removed leaves everything without explicit meaning, just that it exists. And by that logic, art, beauty, etc all fall into that same category: yet another perceptual filter. Beauty exists only in our minds, perhaps so that we may persist in a world whose meaningfulness may be of our own design.

And after you're gone -- perhaps the world is slightly shaped so that your perceptions may persist for others to experience

"[...] meaningfulness may be of our own design."

So true -- it is entirely malleable, more than most people even bother to consider.

  • We don't live in a world of reality, we live in a world of perceptions.
